Sony is marketing their SAL-50F18 as a portrait lens and after trying it out for myself, I am inclined to agree with them. While it can also be used as a general-purpose walk around camera, the build quality looks to be a bit on the flimsy side so I would not feel too confident doing this. It is easy to operate and the image quality is great however so even amateurs will be able to get almost professional results when using this lens. The auto focus is not the quickest I have ever seen and but with an aperture of 1.8 you will be able to take stunning portrait photos. I have even used it at a recent wedding that was set in low light conditions and the photos came out much better than I anticipated. I would say that for the low price it is available at you really cannot go wrong with this lens.
